Camp Juliena is hosting the 11th Annual camp for deaf and hard of hearing children in Georgia. The Cherokee Indians define Juliena to mean Deaf or cannot hear. We are offering two camps this year: Teen Camp Juliena (TCJ) and Young Camp Juliena (YCJ). Camp Juliena is full of fun activities to encourage deaf and hard of hearing children to gain independence, self-confidence, develop social/emotional skills, increase communication and to build leadership skills. The activities include: a variety of games, swimming, boating, canoeing, fishing, hiking, recreation, arts & crafts, nature activities, campfires, stories, presentations and a theatrical production. The staff are a group of volunteers ages 18+, who serve as role models. They believe in the mission of Camp Juliena.
Campers are registered on first come, first serve basis, therefore, please get your application in as soon as possible. The deadline for registration for BOTH camps is May 10, 2002. A letter of confirmation will be mailed by June 1, 2002. To receive your application for camp, send a $20 check or money order along with a completed registration form to the address listed below. Founders Eleanor Foshee and Pat Ford, members of the Georgia Association of the Deaf, established Camp Juliena in 1992. It was out of concern for deaf and hard of hearing children that these two dedicated individuals organized Camp Juliena. They learned that 90% of deaf and hard of hearing children were in mainstream schools. This raised some concerns that perhaps the children were not getting the necessary social interaction that hearing children receive. Being scattered in various schools through out the state of Georgia without a means for bringing this population together launched the first summer program for deaf and hard of hearing children in Georgia. The purpose of Camp Juliena is to provide positive deaf and hard of hearing role models for deaf and hard of hearing children. It increases leadership skills, social skills and enables the children who may be isolated in mainstream programs to interact with peers.
