GACHI Advocacy
GACHI employs a team of hard-working support service specialists
(advocates) to guide, empower, represent and educate deaf and
hearing-impaired individuals who need help accessing social services,
education, health care and other programs. To ensure a person’s
needs are met, the GACHI support service specialist partner with
community organizations, private businesses and local, state and
federal government agencies. Before resorting to legal action,
our support service specialist first try to assist businesses
and organizations by educating them on the principles of the Americans
with Disabilities Act and equipping them with the proper resources
to accommodate those with hearing loss.
What if a business,
agency or organization will not accommodate a deaf or hard-of-hearing
person?
While we would much rather work cooperatively with a company to
resolve accommodation issues, in certain cases, this is not possible.
If our advocates’ attempts to educate and inform the company continue
to be ignored or rejected, we typically empower the deaf or hard-of-hearing
person to contact the Department of Justice and schedule a mediation
session with a representative of the company.
